Rabbi Mordechai and Meechal Roizman were inspired by what they saw while volunteering in the relief effort after Hurricane Sandy. Among other things, they learned that major corporations were donating surplus merchandise to charities such as United Way and Red Cross who, in turn, distributed them to families in need.
A little research revealed that the Jewish community was not tapping into this amazing resource. To participate, an infrastructure to receive, warehouse, and distribute large quantities of goods was necessary but simply did not exist.
Using their own financial resources, with additional support and guidance from The Afikim Foundation, the Roizmans founded the National Council of Jewish Charities, now known as Olam Chesed- World of Giving. As a leader in product philanthropy and purposeful giving, they partner with socially responsible partners to source highly needed goods and distribute them to people in need.
U.S corporations such as Costco, Bed Bath and Beyond, La-Z-Boy, Amazon, Tempurpedic, and Samsung, just to name a few, donate more than 9 billion dollars of products per year.
Olam Chesed is the only Jewish organization that harnesses this tremendous resource to benefit needy individuals and families in our communities.
More recently, World of Giving has been at the forefront of the Coronavirus relief efforts across the Tri-State area… and beyond!
By cultivating relationships with big-brand retailers, Amazon sellers, and national charities, they are able to obtain valuable overstocked essential items including diapers, paper goods, cleaning supplies, Personal Protective Equipment, and so much more!
They then pass along these top-quality products to those who need them, including healthcare workers on the front lines of treating the pandemic, to homebound senior citizens who cannot leave their house to buy basic supplies, or those who have recently lost their jobs and now are in need of assistance.
In times of crisis, communities can always count on World of Giving to step up and bring not only the goods needed to survive – but also the heartwarming reassurance that someone cares.
Communities such as New Rochelle, Riverdale, Monsey, Monroe, the 5 Towns, and Lakewood have all benefitted from major distributions of essential supplies throughout the Covid-19 crisis and Olam Chesed is in the process of establishing permanent branches in many of these communities to benefit all those in need.
